Jose Silva Update
Ok, so I had someone ask me how this went. I have to say, the home study course was great but I can't get it on my Ipod and lugging my laptop upstairs and then back downstairs to do the meditations in the morning and at night was a bit tough for me. I really want to do them more, but I haven't had the motivation. I need to get it on my Ipod! Anybody want to help me with this? I've also considered going to a seminar, but haven't decided what city I want to go to since they don't have any in Michigan-it will be like planning a little mini-vacation. So, my overall review of it is that it's a great program and I recommend it-but only if you are going to be able to dedicate the work it requires to learn it.
No 'Poo Doo and don't wash that Vitamin D out!
Ok, so this isn't really food related...but raw foodists like to keep things natural, so why not with shampoo? I haven't been doing the no 'poo do exactly according to directions (google it...I have a google search bar in the left top corner of this blog if you want) but I have stopped shampooing with regular shampoo every day. I will use just hot water, or lavendar water and tea tree oil. I have to say, it makes my hair actually smell better and it's SO soft (which is something I haven't said in awhile since I started bleaching it!) I maybe wash it twice a week with actual shampoo, and it looks better than ever. Sweet! I also heard too that you can wash Vitamin D off your skin if you use soap. I guess it takes 48 hours for the sunlight to soak into your skin completely. I still use soap, but just in the uh, necessary area lol. You just don't need to go crazy with the body wash/soap on all of your body. Unless of course, you were rolling around in mud or got really sweaty I guess! :P Than do us all a favor and clean up everywhere! I have been getting my 20 minutes of Vitamin D (sunlight) at noon (which I heard was the best time) and upped my Vitamin D dosage, and I have to say, it makes me feel pretty good! I think Vitamin D definitely is important, especially in cloudy places like Michigan! I stopped taking my Vitamin D for a few days because of Memorial Day (I wasn't home) and it was cloudy for four days in a row so I wasn't sitting outside and guess what? I got sick! Ugh. Hard lesson to learn!

Jack in the Green Deli in Kimball, MI
I'm going to Port Huron tomorrow so I was looking for healthy restaurants in the area, and found this place. Kind of a long name, but I'm glad they are there! So, maybe I will not have eat bad tomorrow just because I'm going out! Yay. It seems like they have a good mix of food my non-raw foodist would like also, so that is a plus! Here is their website:
http://www.jack-in-the-greendeli.com/
*I went today and had a lot of fun! The food was really good! We had the avocado sandwich and tuna fish one.We got chips with the meal also that were really nice-ery light tasting. We also had almond and hemp smoothies with fruit. The almond tasted better though. My only concern is the sign outside was really small for the deli. I think they should make that bigger or else all the people driving by so quickly on Lapeer road won't know it is a food place! I think they'd get more business that way. I hope they are successful, it seems like a really cool place. Oh, and there is a spa too! Don't mind the one pic of me-I had absolutely NO makeup on today lol

Shilajit!
Shila-whaaa???
Shilajit!
Too legit, to Shilajit...ok, I'll stop now!
I have been hearing about this stuff from my mom for awhile but she said it makes you sleep a lot, which I definitely didn't need help with!
Now that I'm not working slave hours, I am going to give this stuff a try. I'm on day two, and so far, no miracles yet. However, people tell me I look 10 years younger than I am already and it's supposed to be an anti-aging thing...so maybe I won't have huge results! Oh well, still going to try! I do have a FEW gray hairs, cough, cough, bleach my hair instead of fixing it nutritionally...
I guess if you drink it with raw milk, or use yogurt it's not as bad tasting, but dairy is a big no-no for me, so I've been mixing it with water and it tastes like...well, if you could drink a bonfire, that is what it would taste like!
It's not HORRIBLE, just odd. Feels weird to be drinking something that tastes like smoke!!

LA Cafe in Waterford, MI
Sooo, the owner of this restaurant wrote me a message on the michiganrawfood.com message board awhile ago and I just got it now. lol. I really should check the message board more, and update my website but this blog is really all I have time for right now! I should focus on one project at a time, but when you have 6 that you REALLY want to do, it's tough :) I wish I wasn't so hyperactive mentally sometimes, because my body can't seem to keep up. I need to eat way more raw foods or something. I have a lot of energy, but there still just aren't enough hours in the day! Have you ever had so much on your mind, so much to remember/do, that when you try to talk it comes out sounding like mush? That's how I feel most of the time. lol
Anyways, they aren't a raw food restaurant, but they are vegan/vegetarian friendly:

How to stop a heart attack with Cayenne...
Just put a teaspoon of Cayenne in a hot glass of water, and it is supposed to stop a heart attack! I was skeptical until I asked people who have used it before...apparently it is true!
I just thought everybody should know this, considering how common heart attacks are!

Mobu Herbals...
Speaking of stress and food cravings... I got to try Mobu Herbals recently. I have to admit, the smell of some of them made me gag a bit (sorry, I am very honest person!) but thankfully they absorb in your skin really quick so the smell goes away. In fact, how quickly they absorb seems to be the same reason why they work so good.
I am not getting paid to promote these products...but let's just say I think they can work miracles!! Wow.
Of course, this technology used to be used for ages, and we have screwed things up and have forgotten it.
Let me explain. I just had a horrible allergic reaction to those antiobitics I took. My skin has been red and itchy on my leg for almost a month now. I was just thinking yesterday, I've tried EVERYTHING, I guess it's time to give up and go to a doctor (who caused this in the first place...) and find out what medication will get rid of it....I was getting desperate. It made me really uncomfortable at work, and it looked awful too.
Well, I had a TINY sample of the S.O.S. Balm and guess what? It was healed in ONE day!!!!
ONE DAY.
You can imagine how happy I am! :)
I can't wait to try the diet one and the A.M. Pain one (for my migraines...been getting them again lately for the first time in 5 years and don't want to keep taking motrin 800!)!!

I hope other people have such good experiences with them also!

Dairy and high fat foods are like morphine?!
Ok, now that I got your attention...lol
I was wondering the other day why, despite eating healthy and feeling full, I was craving, HAD TO HAVE, something else. What did I need? Something fattening, full of dairy or cheese! I HAD to have it. I couldn't concentrate on anything else!! If I didn't have it, I wouldn't get anything else done, plus, I'm under a lot of stress right now, and I knew it would make me feel good (at least instantly, although not for the long term!)
I started thinking...I'm acting like an addict! I suppose I'm more sensitive to this issue of drug addiction lately, since my friend who passed away died of a heroin overdose. As long as I had known her she struggled with this habit, but could not stop it. It was so sad to watch. She would get better, and then relapse. When she moved out of state, I felt helpless. I couldn't be a good influence on her anymore.
Man, I told myself I was going to make this short because I'm running behind on things today...that is not working!
Ok, long story short, I did a ton of research on dairy and found out that it has casein in it. Casein is a protein that when digested, (and especially if the food it is in has lots of fat and sugar, and it's processed-hey, sounds like fast food, cheese, and dairy? Remember, fat and sugar and processed junk is key here, becuase plenty of people can eat non-processed, healthy cheese and not gain lots of weight or even get addicted. I think what is important is the quality and combo of ingredients in the cheese, dairy,or any food you crave...or if u are like me,and have an allergy to whey and are probably lacking the enzymes to digest dairy naturally)
Ok, so this isn't going to be a short blog. I need to just accept that :)
So, back to casein-this turns into casomorphins, which have an opiate or morphine like effect! (heroin is an opiate also)
This is some strong stuff!
I was wondering, ok, it can't be THAT addictive though, right? How could something so harmless as food be that? Well, but it makes sense that it would be VERY addictive. Sure, it won't kill you quickly if you have too much dairy like heroin will, but it is a very strong urge! This addictive chemical is in dairy because when we are young, we need to WANT to drink milk. Babies need it to survive. Therefore it's addictive. Wow, this is so simple! How did I not see this before? This is why dairy is so harmful! It was only meant for when we are younger! I'm not saying dairy here and there when you are an adult is going to kill you BUT it was never meant to be processed, and combined with so much fat and sugar, and not to mention, plenty of people don't have the digestive enzymes when they get older (therefore, it's easier to have problems and addiction)
Dairy was never really meant for the adult body. It has some good qualities in it, but you stopped eating baby food when you got older right? So, why do we continue to eat dairy? And from an animal, no less?! Why do we continue to eat fast food or junk food when we know it's bad?
Because we get addicted!!
So it's not my lack of will power that I can't stick to a vegan or raw food diet!!
Ok, maybe not. I could just stop eating it and deal with the withdrawal symptoms!
But I don't want to! I LIKE the quick feeling of calm it gives me. Let's face it. We are a busy society. We are a stressed society. Bad food (i.e. calming foods) are a quick fix! And I like that darn it. lol It's not hurting anyone else like second hand smoke, or alcohol and getting in a car accident..so it's tough for me to want to stop it.
It's such a quick fix, even if I feel bad later. I can't help but think the people who are the right weight have just found foods that create a similar calming effect-at least the skinny ones who are HAPPY anyways. I'm sure there are plenty who are skinny, but miserable by their food choices!
I thought, why not find a food that does the same thing, but that isn't fattening or bad for you?!
I remembered seeing a product called L-Theanine when I was trying to learn about all of the many products at Zerbos. lol
It is a mood enhances and calms you down. And when I researched it I found it was in green tea! Which is great for you!!
So, my theory goes like this...when I'm stressed, and have a craving for calming dairy or junk food...I should replace it with Green tea!
I don't have time to make green tea all the time, so I just got the extract and put in water.
So, far, I have noticed a huge reduction in cravings. It really seems to be working!
I'm also drinking more water, which of course, helps keep me full.
I originally wanted green tea gum, but couldn't find any here. I think that would be even easier and less obvious than carrying a water bottle everywhere.
People might say, ok, well every time you get a craving and you drink water, you fill yourself up with water and you don't want to eat dairy because you are full. Maybe that is partly true, but I used to drink at least 32 ounces of water a day, and still craved dairy. So, I do think the green tea is just giving me an extra boost on my cravings.
I'm sure plenty of people will say, I had no problem giving up dairy and don't miss it at all. How come I didn't get addicted? Or people (probably because they are addicted and terrified of losing their dairy!) will get angry and say there is nothing wrong with dairy! Ok, well maybe you didn't get addicted because you didn't eat as much fattening dairy products, or a lot of cheese? Remember, addictions take time. Also, you may be one of the lucky ones (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) who have a lot of the enzymes to digest dairy. So, you are less likely to have issues with dairy in the first place.
It's been shown though, that even people who have no problem giving up dairy still get strong cravings for cheese. Why is this? Well, cheese has the MOST casomorphins in it. Way more than milk. Draw your own conclusions!
There are a lot of articles, so I apologize for not posting all my references...the only scientific study I could find was from University of Michigan on the effects of the opiate drug blocker Naxolene on subjects eating habits, and a book called,"Breaking the Food Seduction." Have fun researching!

Natural alternative to prescription Medication for Depression
I heard recently a lot of good reviews on 5 HTP. It apparently works jsut as good, if not better, than prescription medication for depression. This is good news for those without health insurance or coverage for these kinds of medication, or for those who don't want to risk the side effects of depression medication. I read that the dosage and rules for how to take 5 HTP can vary, so it may be good to see a homeopathic doctor to make sure you are taking it correctly for your situation, or at least do your research online a lot. You can get it at Zerbo's in Livonia, Michigan and probably a few other health stores in the area.
Common Mistakes of an Aspiring Raw Foodie
Common Mistakes of an Aspiring Raw Foodie
If you’re a newcomer to this way of life, there are a few mistakes you need to avoid making if you want to make a success out of making your diet raw/living foods:
• Aspiring to become 100 percent too soon: Eating only raw food takes a great deal of control and dedication, something that’s not easy for even the most diehard raw food enthusiasts. So it’s best to go slow – if you’re thinking of moving to raw food from a normal non-vegetarian diet, it’s best to go vegetarian or vegan before you try eating raw. Although raw food does include a few animal products, most raw foodies stick to the vegetarian and vegan parts of raw food. Include more raw food in your diet as each day (or week) goes by; this way, it’s easier for you (mentally) and your system (physically) to adjust.
• Thinking that you must become 100 percent to be a real raw foodie: You need to remember that you’re doing this for your health, so it’s best to go with what you feel comfortable doing. If you feel the need to eat cooked food once in a while, it’s ok to do so. In fact, some people prefer to stay 95 percent because it allows them to prevent stares and uninvited questions when they’re out with people or in other social contexts.
• Losing control once you’re there: If you’re a 95 percent raw foodie, you’re going to eat cooked food now and then. So you need to be careful about going overboard and eating too much cooked food. Of course, if that’s what you want to do, then go ahead. But if you’ve decided to remain on the raw side, you need to ensure that the baked potato you ordered with your salad does not extend to dessert too. Once you lose control, it’s easy to go back to your old eating habits.
• Eating too much of the same thing: You may love bananas (or any other fruit), but if you eat them day in and day out, you’re going to get fed up and crave something else. To prevent this, you need to vary your diet and look around for interesting recipes that keep your meals from becoming boring. You also need to avoid eating too much of one kind of food because your body needs a balanced diet of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. So avoid gorging on just nuts, just fruits, or just vegetables. Mix them up so that you get variety and your body gets all the nutrients that it needs.
• Eating too many acidic fruits: Eating acidic fruits can give you acidity and other gastric problems while depending too much on dried fruits can give you dental problems. You need to go easy on the juices so that your body gets the required amount of fiber. Make sure that you’re getting enough calories so that you’re not tired too soon.
